Career Talk - Information Technology

    Five speakers from the industry shared their valuable IT experience in the talk.
It was a wonderful evening with lots of information exchange between the speaker and the floor.

1. Ir. Dr. W. K. Lo (Mech Eng 1976) - Hardware
Managing Director,
Artesyn Technologies Asia-Pacific Ltd.

   Dr. Lo detailed on the campus life day back to1973 and walkthrough his career in the past. With his years of experiencein the field and now as a Managing Director of a listed company, he suggested the graduate to accomplish him/herself with a technical skill set, processing the correct attitude and to be devoted at work. He also conveyed a message from a recent regional computer conference that India/Europe will become more important in manpower supply in coming years. Local youngster should equip him/herself to meet the challenge.

2. Mr. Arthur Chang (CS 1988) - Internet
Managing Director, Asia Pacific,
Network Solutions

    Mr. Chang started working in IBM after graduation. He is now working in Network Solutions which has recently been merged to VeriSign having serious business in the Internet arena. Mr. Chang suggested the graduates to have exposure from other discipline other IT matters. He pointed out that written and spoken communication skills in Mandarin are becoming important nowadays. Being aggressive, but not to a threatening extend, could also be a bonus.

3. Mr. Kanson Ng (Ind Eng 1995) - Advertising & Marketing
Director of business development,
Adforall

    Mr. Ng presented an interesting session with his work history starting as a management trainee. He described how he used a SWOT analysis to match his skill set to the interviewers and successfully get the job. He pointed out that some employers may have preference to employ graduate from other universities. Our graduate may have participation in the Alumni network in order to learn the market needs.

4. Miss. Amelia Sze-Mei Yeung (CS 1996) - Professional Services
Advisory IT Specialist,
IBM China/Hong Kong Ltd.

    Ms. Yeung described her work in IBM as a consultant for systems integration projects. For job hunting, she recalled the time when she get graduated, there were classmates taking teaching jobs and evening jobs in Singapore. She also pointed out that written and spoken communication skills are important nowadays.

5. Miss. Carol Shuk-Mei Lee (IS 2000) - Software Development
Associate,
Core Solutions Ltd.

    Ms. Lee delivered the latest information on the job market. Some of her classmates joined large corporation while some with local firms after getting graduated last years. She pointed out that some prefer to establish solid experiences in local firms while some have other exposure through training overseas in large corporation.
